‘Dev’ is a prolific visual artist who loves to create works guided by his vision of the potential of Art to be life changing. He began his artistic journey very early in life. The exposure he received shaped his thought process to explore, dwell and create works without any boundations, uninhibitedly.

From the start he felt, that he rather paint something which makes people think different each time they see the painting, each viewing evoking different responses. Art is also a language to him which transcends words. He sees Art as a blessing from the divine and canvas, colours, brushes, knives, tools as a way of communication for an artist.

His exposure to art and artists of different countries strengthened his belief in the universality of art. The masters in particular influenced his young mind. He uses different mediums on surfaces like linen, canvas and jute with unusual combinations. One can compare art with science because without experimenting one will not get the desired result. The smell of paint wants him to create works. His paintings and vision offer a perspective of a modern era of the future.

He is fond of working on 'Paper' since it defines the gravity of how a piece of paper can transform into something we call a work of art. It is also an empirical experience. Looking at his work puts the viewers inside a moment to experience laughter, sadness, guilt, bliss and confusion. Dev has done this on archival paper with markers and charcoal so that there can be a feeling of modernity and a renaissance behind it.

The intricacies and detailing of each give the resemblance of different cultures on one hand a very cubist figure on the other. Each one of them has a different storyline altogether. The meaning behind ‘is being demotional’. Demotional means detached and e-emotional. In his current mindset, he wants this series of paintings to give a sense of things in life of being detached but still emotional to it.

His past project was ‘Tranquil in Paradise’ which focused on abstraction, expressionism, modernism, cubism and abstract expressionism, with it being an aesthetic, traditional way of expressing simple life forms which gives us so much into ours. He has been interested and focused on what this has been as his past body of work.

Currently, he is looking at how to balance history, the Persian and Mughal traditions in his paintings as well as cubism which would constitute the idea of the ‘Paper Period’. Paper works strengthen his creative output as he is able to transform his thoughts into actuality. It also fine tunes his drawing skills and emboldens his sketches.

He is curious to explore more diverse cultures by reading and observing the real world with a natural lens. Life is very fragile, a beautiful thing. He works within this fragility to craft original artworks. These artworks have the potential to make the viewers think and reflect on what he calls a defining moment in his life. Exploring different mediums will help him understand more about what the life process is all about. These artworks can be realized with coherence only with the conclusion of this project.
